The movie Mother by Bong Joon-ho is about an over-controlling mother-and-son relationship. Yoon, the son is always being controlled and watched by his mother. For the sequence, suffocation was used as a framing device to visualize the control Yoon’s mother has over him. His mother is so controlling to the point where it’s suffocating for him. Her unwillingness to let go of control eventually leads to chaos and violence that comes back to haunt her.

Process: Physical
The letters were created by glueing multiple laser-cut MDF pieces together.
The photoshoot involved a model being covered by a plastic sheet and a smoke machine.
Process: Digital
Houdini was used to simulate additional compositing assets to create more tension between the letters and the plastic sheet.
